ALERT LEVEL 3 LOCKDOWN

The government has announced that Auckland will move into Alert Level 3 Lockdown from midnight tonight 14/02/2021, for three days. This means that the Club will be closed this Wednesday. We are chess players who play in close proximity to each other, whereas the recommended distance should be two metres apart. So we will need to wait until we return to Alert Level 1 before reopening the Club. I will post another message once the government gives the all clear.

POT LUCK DINNER

On Wednesday 10th February 2021 we celebrate the 50th year of our longest standing Club member, John McRae.

John started at the Club in 1971 and has held most positions for the Club, including Secretary, Treasurer, President and Juniors Club Captain. He has worked tirelessly and without recognition for all these years for a game he loves, and for the community he loves. So much that he is widely known as “Mister Papatoetoe Chess Club”. His reputation is recognised and acknowledged in all the other chess clubs in Auckland, and in the Papatoetoe Council and Manukau Council as well as most schools in Papatoetoe. He is well known for his relationship with the Auckland Racing Club, and securing playing venues at Alexander Park for the ACA Interclub for many decades.

Can everyone please bring a plate. I will also send out a group email. Let’s celebrate and honour our greatest Club member on Wednesday.

I also take this opportunity to remind you all that the annual membership fees are now due to be paid. Seniors/adults $100 and Juniors $50. Payment is online to ASB 12-3028-0428483-00 and Particulars: LastName, Code: Sen Sub or Jun Sub. Also email Treasurer Harry Bong harry_bong@hotmail.com to let him know. Thank you.

Congratulations to all those who were elected or reelected at the AGM, who choose to give up their time freely for the game and for the club they love. Special congratulations to our new Juniors Club Captain Philip Mukkattu, who brings new and fresh enthusiasm to our fantastic leadership team.

NEWS March 2021

Monday 15th March 2021.

We are back at the Club this Wednesday 17th March, and will continue round 4 of the Joe Tyson Summer Cup. This tournament has been reduced to 5 rounds, and the interclub match versus Waitakere has been cancelled.

We have missed through Lockdown 17th Feb, 3rd Mar and 10th Mar. I am hopeful of asking the Bowling Club to make up these three days at the end of the year. A revised Club Schedule is attached, and also on the home page of the Club website www.papatoetoechessclub.org.nz (this will of course change if there are future Lockdowns).

In the meantime the online Club has finished the Stan Yee Invitational President’s Cup and will tomorrow finish the final round of the John McRae Invitational Gold Cup.

Friday 5th March 2021.

ALERT LEVEL 2

The government has announced that Auckland will move down into Alert Level 2 from 6am Sunday 7/03/2021. This means that the Club will remain closed this Wednesday 10/03/21.

We will continue playing online. There has been a demand from more players of the Club to join our online tournaments, but 12 players are as much as I can handle. Last year’s three cases of online cheating, the recent player dispute and server restart has firmly convinced me of that. That will be the limit for these tournaments, as I was hard pressed to sort out all the problems and still play my own games. These are tournaments by invitation only, and the players from last year’s six online tournaments have preference over any newcomers. Newcomers must be longstanding over the board Club members, able to play every day, and have played regularly over the board in recent years at the Club.

We still cannot meet under Alert Level 3 lockdown, and last Friday 22nd October the government announced that when we have the country 90% vaccinated we will move to the Traffic Light system. We will need to be “Orange Vaccinated Events indoor/outdoor” before we can open the club again. That may be sometime in December. This will also mean we will miss the Papatoetoe Rapid, due 4th and 5th December.

  1. Update on Chess under Covid Restrictions

NZCF Council met by Zoom last Sunday 31st October. There has been extensive and ongoing email discussion including input from external sources. After thorough discussion, the following decision was agreed by majority:

NZCF Council advises Clubs that each Club, as an independent entity, must decide for themselves, and bear responsibility for their decision, if over-the-board Club play is safe for their members at current Government defined ‘Level 2’. Such Club games will be eligible for NZCF and FIDE rating. Obviously, all Government mandates must be followed regarding registration, sanitation, social distancing, mask wearing etc.

Of those Councillors that did not support this decision, two have requested their names be public:

Ross Jackson and Stan Yee.

NZCF Council is not collectively qualified to judge safety risk of Covid infection during Club play. We do however urge a strongly precautionary approach and made the following decision unanimously:

NZCF Council recommends to Clubs that all persons present on Club premises wear masks, be fully vaccinated and do not consume food and drink.

Note that there is no change to Council advice that no NZCF official tournaments will be conducted (nor should Open tournaments be conducted) until the Covid-19 Protection Framework (‘traffic light system’) is formally in place and the legal definitions of ‘Red’, ‘Orange’ and ‘Green’ are available.

The Government is due to make an announcement on implementation of Covid-19 Protection Framework on 29th November. Council will meet 30th November and will advise chess community how this system affects official tournaments, Congress in particular.

  1. FIDE Grant for Junior Coaching, Trainer Development, Arbiter Training

Paul Spiller and I attended by Zoom a meeting of FIDE’s Planning & Development Commission (PDC). Following encouragement from the Chair, we put together a proposal for online development activities in December which we are delighted to advise was approved for funding. Hilton Bennett is our delegated Organiser and will announce details soon.

  1. Asian Chess Federation Online Tournaments and Trainers Seminar

There has been a remarkable number of online tournaments this year, mostly for Juniors, organised by Asian Chess Federation. These have been well attended by our Juniors in various age groups despite the quite high entry fees. Since my last newsletter in August, our Juniors have performed creditably in Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship (host Thailand Chess Association) and Asian Youth Championship (host All India Chess Federation). Daqi Mao scored a notable 7/9 in the Asian Youth sharing 5 th place in field of 250. The Asian Amateur Championship (host: Oman Chess Committee) will be played this month. These tournaments create a lot of work for the Secretary of NZCF and for me, but I particularly want to thank Timothy Ha who has indefatigably convened, supervised and problem-solved all these events. Thanks Timothy! Evguenia Charomova (and I as guest) participated in a FIDE Trainers Online Seminar. This was a set of Zoom lectures over three nights lasting past midnight! We hope to get the recorded lectures available for use by NZCF.

  1. NZ Seniors and Veterans Online Championship

In view of Covid restrictions the formal over-the-board Championship is replaced with our first NZCF online event. Although played at standard time control there is an element of fun in this tournament played on a trust basis and open to international players. Thanks to Paul Spiller (Organiser), Bruce Pollard (Arbiter) and Timothy Ha (Convenor) who made this happen!

Nigel Metge

NZCF President

I also wish to advise you that our usual Papatoetoe Rapid Sat 4th and Sun 5th December will not go ahead this year, due to the Covid restrictions, and the fact that the Club must give one month’s notice to FIDE before holding a FIDE event. I will keep you informed as to the direction of the Club after the NZCF Council meets on Tue 30th November. I will call a vote from my Committee by email immediately after.

NEWS January 2022

Papatoetoe Chess Club AGM & Prizegiving Wednesday 2nd February 2022

The Bowling Club had a meeting with the owners, the Kolmar Trust, on Wednesday 8th December, and of course the country had the government announcement for the new Traffic Light System dates set on Monday 13th December, stating that Auckland will be in the Orange light from Friday 31st December until Monday 17th January. Thank you to the 23 members who completed the Survey, from the membership of 83. But there is not a lot to discuss, as the Chess Club must go with whatever rules the Bowling Club has set down for us as guests in their premises. The guide is to fall in line with their Bridge Club, which is also not back yet, but will be allowed under the Orange light. The Bowling Club requires all Bridge Club and Chess Club members and visitors and parents dropping off children to be:

Double Vaccinated with NZ Pass Verifier – I will scan everyone in and the Bowling Club will check this, as they are required to evidence this for the Kolmar Trust (Stan to scan everyone in)

Wear face mask under Orange light

Be socially distanced where possible

Use Hand Sanitiser (Stan will provide)

Scan in on the Covid app at the double doors – we are not to use the side door to avoid scanning in

Have a secondary hard copy record for those who do not have a smartphone (Stan will organise)

No food or drinks at the table or inside – if you must, do this outside, then put your mask back on before coming back inside

Visitors and parents will not be allowed on the premises for dropping off or picking up children. All children must be vaccinated. The Bowling Club will not allow any children on the premises without being vaccinated, regardless of age. These are all not negotiable rules. So, the only issue the Chess Club Committee voted on was whether we go back under the Orange light or the Green light. We had this vote, and the results from Friday 17th December were:

Orange 8

Green 2

No vote 2

Therefore, the majority decision of the Committee is that we return if still under the Orange light on Wednesday 2nd February 2022, starting on that day with the AGM at 7pm sharp, followed by our Annual Prize Giving. I will soon update the prize winners on the tournament page of this website, and liaise with Club Captain Alex Postma for the engraving of trophies and miniatures. Remember, do not bring any food. There will be no drinks.

I will stay in touch with the Bowling Club and see what the Monday 17th January announcement will bring, and which Traffic Light setting we will be in at that time.

NEWS April 2022

Wednesday 13th April 2022.

The government has today announced that the whole country will be moving from the Red light to the Orange light at 11.59pm tonight. So we are finally back at the chess club next Wednesday 20th April, after the longest wait ever. We have not been at the club since lockdown on 17th August 2021, apart from our AGM on 2nd February 2022. There are rules for indoors, with face masks. But you do not require a Vaccine Pass or need to wear a mask outdoors. We at the club will require the wearing of face masks indoors, and of course during your game. But if you wish to go outside for some fresh air you may do so during your game. Mobile phones are of course not allowed to be switched on. This also applies to parents, as a phone ringing is annoying and distracting, so will parents please be mindful of others.

The schedule will look like this:

To celebrate our return, we have a voluntary POT LUCK DINNER. This will be held OUTSIDE on two tables at 6pm, followed by the juniors session lead by Philip at 6.15pm and the Seniors at 7.15pm

For juniors, under 20 years of age, you should email the Coach Philip Mukkattu philipmphilip@yahoo.com for entry into the junior tournament BY 5PM TUESDAY 19TH APRIL.

You are required to email Vice Club Captain Scott Smith scottrs88827@yahoo.com with your entry into this Seniors tournament BY 5PM TUESDAY 19TH APRIL.

The online Bruce Marsick Rapid will continue as follows:

Round 4 Wed 13th April

Round 5 Sat 16th April

Round 6 Tue 19th April

NOTE THE LAST ROUND HAS BEEN CHANGED TO TUESDAY.

NEWS July 2022

Monday 25 July 2002.

Covid numbers are only slightly down. The 7-day rolling average is 8,498 and 16 deaths. This is slightly better than last Monday. The Interclub has been cancelled for this year, as there are a number of clubs unwilling to commit teams to the tournament due to Covid. I am getting reports from my church and my real estate office of Covid cases. There is also the vulnerability of our Bowling Club members to consider too. Under these trying circumstances I consider it too risky to meet this Wednesday. We will stick to Plan A but delay it for one week. The trend is slightly down, so hopefully we may meet next Wednesday 3rd August, but with NO FOOD AND WE ALL WEAR MASKS, NO EXCEPTIONS. THAT MEANS EVERYONE INCLUDING CHILDREN, SO PARENTS MAKE SURE YOU REMEMBER TO BRING MASKS. If that goes well, then we can have food the following Wednesday 10 August.

I will email again next Monday.

Monday 18th July 2022.

The Ministry of Health has today announced 7,975 new Covid-19 daily cases. So we are still in the second spike in cases since the peak spike in April this year, having risen to 10,400 and only in the last few days dropped back down. This is of serious concern to health experts and Covid-19 modelers, and is also a concern to me. This week there have been no club members who have reported in to say they are isolating from Covid-19 and will not be at the club this Wednesday, which is good news.

But with the recent three cases in our club, we will not open this Wednesday 20th July, and if the trend in Covid cases continues to subside we should be back at the club in a week from now on Wednesday 27th July. But when we do return, as a precaution we should all wear masks, and there will be no food at the club. If all goes well we may reintroduce food the week after on the 3rd August. I think a drinks break is fine, but I encourage everyone to drink outdoors.

Please be careful with who you mix and mingle with, and if they are not in your bubble and are not wearing a mask I suggest you excuse yourself. We at the club want to mix with people who are careful with their behaviours and want to protect ourselves and our families. We should also be mindful of our landlord, the bowling club, as they are a little older and more vulnerable.

The Ministry of Health has today announced 8,675 new Covid-19 cases. This is a spike in cases since the peak spike in April this year. This is of serious concern to health experts and Covid-19 modelers, and is also a concern to me. To date there have been several club members who have reported in to say they are isolating from Covid-19 and will not be at the club this Wednesday, and our current relaxation of mask wearing and allowing food at the club may be encouraging the spread of the virus or putting club members at risk.

Therefore, we are forced to close the club this Wednesday 13th July until further notice.

NEWS August 2022

CHESS CLUB REST DAY 24 AUGUST

The Covid 7-day average is now 4,230 with 14 dead. This is far better than just before we locked down on the 13th July. But we must still keep our guard up. Masks are our best form of protection, and we will continue to wear masks as recommended but not compulsory. We will have biscuits, and hot food if John brings some. But let’s keep it limited.

This coming Wednesday 17th August will be the last two rounds of the Ewen Green Rapid. It has been decided to move our Rest Day to the 24th August. Therefore, the first round of the Club Championship has been deferred until 31st August.

See you on Wednesday.

CHESS CLUB THIS WEDNESDAY 10th August

The Chess Club is open this Wednesday. It appears that things are back to normal, or as normal as a pandemic can be. The 7-day rolling average is 5288 with 13 deaths. This is about half the numbers from when we closed the Club about 4 weeks ago on the 13th July. But do not be complacent with your safety. Keep away from people if you can, and wear a mask as your best protection against Covid. We are open again this Wednesday, in the 3rd and 4th rounds of the Ewen Green Rapid. You are encouraged to wear masks, but this is not compulsory. There may be biscuits but not hot food. There will be tea and coffee.

Those who have not paid their Club Fee of $50 for Seniors or $25 for Juniors for the first six months are not eligible to play in this tournament, and should make an arrangement with the Treasurer Harry Bong by emailing him at harry_bong@hotmail.com and the Club Fee for the last six months of $50/$25 is due before the end of the current tournament on 17th August. 50 years of service to the Papatoetoe Chess Club

Wednesday 10th February 2021.

President Stan Yee reads the card prepared by Katrine McCarthy.

Thanks Mr Papatoetoe Chess

Thank you John, from all past and present members. The John McRae Invitational Gold Cup was created in lockdown last year to recognise the value that John has brought to the Club, see the middle column. “Gold” for the 50 golden years he has given to the Club.

The Passing of our Dear Friend Temu Maroroa

I have some very sad news. Just yesterday I learnt that our stalwart chess club comrade in arms, Temu Mararoa has passed away. May the Lord rest his soul.

A few days ago, he had a bad fall and his health rapidly deteriorated from that point from complications. He passed away yesterday.

He was a determined competitor with a remarkably effective style, always very aggressive in the attack, who can forget those massive pawn storm attacks. Temu was fiercely club loyal and I don’t remember many nights that he wasn’t with us.

Apparently his daughter Sue is homeward bound from the UK and John McRae will be updating us with the funeral details later.

Kindest regards and blessings in the Lord Jesus for the grieving family.

From Vice Captain Scott Smith, President Stan Yee

and all the online team members who are currently playing in the Bruce Marsick Rapid.

Funeral Arrangements for Temu Maroroa

Note that the Funeral Service for tomorrow night at 6pm is for FAMILY ONLY. The Final Service is on MONDAY 10AM at Lagoon View Funeral Services, 3 Korma Lane, Panmure. After the service there will be a funeral procession from the funeral home to visit various favourite places that Temu loved, including the Papatoetoe Chess Club at the Hunters Corner Bowling Club, 247 Great South Road, Papatoetoe. From there the procession will proceed to the Manukau Memorial Gardens prior to the burial at 1pm. Club members and family are invited to join the funeral procession (please remember to turn your lights on). If you are unable, you can wait at the Club for the drive by (please park in the main car park, not directly outside the Club rooms).

MAROROA, Temu Apera (Temu). Born September 1, 1955. Passed away on March 25, 2022. Temu passed peacefully surrounded by family. Beloved husband to Suee Lee, father to Sue and Andrew, best Papa to Samaria, son to Mama Makatea Temu Apera and Maroroa Isaia. Temu will lie in state at Lagoon View Funeral Services from Friday 1 April. Family service will be held on Saturday 2 April from 6pm. Final service will be held on Monday 4 April at 10am, burial same day at Manukau Memorial Gardens at 1pm.

Stan Yee Invitational President’s Cup 2021

Tuesday 9th March 2021.

A fine tournament had by all. As the sayings goes, it’s the competing that counts, and not the result. Thank you everyone for the fine sportsmanship you have all shown, through server restarts, and in one case an opponent falling asleep zzzzz.

Standings

A Grade Winner (1600+) Stan Yee

B Grade Winner (1300 to 1599) Stefan Brzozowski

C Grade Winner (up to 1299) John McRae

What amazing results. 2nd – 5th =

Philip Mukkattu 5

Stefan Brzozowski 5

Leyton Hackney 5

Mike Buis 5

Ar John Guan 4.5 6th – 7th =

Ariel Patdu 4.5

Gagan Bihani 4 8th – 9th =

Roy Uta’i 4

Well, we all beat each other, it seems. Don’t be disheartened down the lower points, as you can see by the ratings that you weren’t expected to beat the big guns. It is the spirit of competing that counts.

Saturday 6th March 2021.

Round 6 results are below. Scott wins with his Caro over Josh. Ariel beats John. Mike gets mated against Gagan in a free for all battle. Ar John and Stefan draw. Roy’s attack collapses against Philip. Leyton and Stan had another rumble in the jungle, and Stan somehow dodges the blows whilst being forced against the ropes.

Friday 5th March 2021.

Round 5. Ar John beats John. Gagan plays a beautiful attack against the Latvian from Josh. Roy beats Scott. Stan has a lucky win over Ariel. Stefan has a brilliant win against Mike, the best I have seen him play. In the end all Stefan’s moves were natural winning moves, playing themselves like a concerto. Leyton took Philip apart with his Benko Gambit. If you are going to grab the pawn you must know the forcing lines for White, otherwise Black’s piece play is natural and so easy.

Friday 5th March 2021.

Round 4. We had lots of drama last night, with the server restarting. But we all got through. Results of Round 4 are below. Ariel wins over Josh after the game crashed even before the scheduled 8pm server restart. Ariel almost threw the game away with … Qb4?? at the end but Josh didn’t see it. Roy scored a good win over John in a pawn locked position, after … g6? and Be5! and broke through. I was on the phone to Scott telling him to ring Gagan as the server was going to restart, and Scott got distracted and promptly threw his Queen away. Gagan was a good sport and understood all this, and offered to replay the game. Scott wins with a reversal in fortunes, and Scott and Gagan decide the best way forward is to call the result a draw.  An extraordinary show of sportsmanship, and the best result of the tournament in my opinion. Ar John went wrong with f5?! in the Sicilian Grand Prix Attack. Leyton played like a monster, and … c4! immediately punishing that mistake, with the ensuing melee leaving Leyton a pawn up. Bb1?? threw a piece and the game, but the position was dire anyway. Stefan was seeing things that weren’t there against Stan and had a senior moment, dropping his Queen. Happens to us all. Philip and Mike actually finished before the server restart, and takes the lead after a devastating attack on Mike’s king.

Tuesday 2nd March 2021.

Round 2. Well done folks, without incident tonight. John missed a win against Josh but got the draw. A good result given the rating difference. Roy and Ariel were the last game to finish. I recommend watching the other games. It is more entertaining than cats in cartons. Stefan gets his first full point against the formidable Scott. Philip wins over the new boy Gagan. Mike versus Leyton was like a rumble in the jungle. Leyton had a pawn up but not much time. A complex ending. The clock finally beat him. Ar John had a senior moment and I got lucky.

Monday 1st March 2021.

We are in Lockdown again, for the 4th time. So, we will kick off our first online tournament of the year. The Stan Yee Invitational President’s Cup 2021 will be by invitation only for our club members so I as the organiser don’t have to open it up to the whole club and sort out the administration of entries. It will be online so we have no problems in fitting it into our club schedule. We will stick with the last tournament players for ease of administration, plus Philip, Gagan and Josh. First round will be tonight Monday 1st March 7.15pm and every night 7.15pm for 8 rounds, final round Monday 8th March. You are expected to email your opponent asap to ensure you can share handles and pleasantries well before start at 7.15pm.

Final player entries are below. Pairings are attached. Please email your opponent now, and ensure you will both be available at 7.15pm. Set the clock to 60+10 using the Custom function. Search for your opponent’s handle. Set your correct colour up. Email Stan the result. See you all at 7.15pm.

John McRae Invitational Gold Cup 2021

Thursday 18th March 2021.

Results are below for the John McRae Invitational Gold Cup online tournament, completed on Tuesday 16th March 2021. Congratulations to Ar John, with a perfect score of 7/7, showing huge potential for his young age. I remember it was only in 2019 that he won the most improved player award, and he won the President’s Cup last year also with a perfect score. 2nd= Stan and Leyton 5, 4th Rosjier 3.5, 5-8th= Gagan, Roy, John and Mike 3, 9th Ariel 2.5. The surprise was the man the tournament is named after! John played very well, and certainly well above his rating. Rosjier also did very well, and almost held me to a draw in the final round. What an amazing tournament. Well done everyone.

Congratulations to:

A Grade Winner ACM Ar John Guan

B Grade Winner Rosjier Hall

C Grade Winner John McRae

Thursday 11th March 2021.

Round 2. Roy had the Bye. Gagan and Rosjier had a good arm wrestle, with Gagan coming out on top. Mike set up a puzzle for Leyton with Rf1? Pause and see if you can solve it. Ar John outplays John and wins a piece. Stan got lucky against Ariel.

Wednesday 10th March 2021.

We are still in Alert Level 2 Lockdown, and cannot go back to the Club. So we will start the John McRae Invitational Gold Cup today Wednesday 10th March. Note that we will play every night, with the 7th and final round on Tuesday 16th March. Please email your opponent the day before, especially if you are going to be late. Philip, Scott, Stefan, Barry,  Harry and Josh cannot make it. We welcome back Rosjier Hall. Please make sure you all Friend him, otherwise you will have problems challenging him on the day. Rosjier, please make sure you Friend everyone else. Disputes Committee is Mike, Leyton and Stan. Time control is 60/10. Format is Vega Swiss. Grades are A 1600+, B 1300-1599, C up to 1299. Miniatures or medallions will be awarded at next year’s AGM. This tournament is not rated by NZCF. But it has bragging rights. And it is in honour of John McRae, Mr Papatoetoe Chess, and the 50 years he has given to the Club. Thank you John. John will be at the Auckland Chess Association meeting this Sunday night 7pm, so if he is your opponent you will need to arrange to play him at an earlier time, so I can get the results for the night out in good time.

Ariel Patdu 1424 (SiomaiQueen)

John McRae 1190 (Skymajor1)

Round 1. Interesting games indeed. Ariel wins over Leyton, who had a crushing attack as Black down the Kingside. But blundered in a Queen exchange combination which tail end was hard to see, but his solitary Knight came to grief after the on the ball Ariel went Re1! trapping it. Ar John wins over Roy in an even game. The Black King was not safe in the middle, and Ar John exploited that vulnerability and won the Queen for two rooks and picked off the pawns. Rosjier was winning with the exchange up, and later Queen vs Rook and Bishop. But Rosjier couldn’t finish and Mike scrapped a draw by perpetual check. Stan and Gagan played an interesting original QGD opening and the Black King got stuck in the centre with the Queenside paralysed, and it was only a matter of time before the collapse.

See you all tomorrow night 7.15pm.

Online Nations Trophy 2021

Friday 3rd September 2021.

Gentlemen, we have been in lockdown for 17 days now, since midnight Tuesday 17th August. I hope you have all caught up with your paperwork, as I have. So it is now time to play another online tournament.

The trophy for the Online Nations Trophy tournament was kindly donated by Roy Uta’i during lockdown last year. It is officially called the Papatoetoe Online Nations Chess Championship Trophy. The trophy is currently jointly held by Mike Buis and Stan Yee after the inaugural tournament in May 2020.

This will be yet another fun tournament, with each player selecting a country they wish to represent, inspired by last year’s tournament of the same name involving teams around the world and shown live on chess dot com. Also appropriate with the recent Olympics and the current Paralympics. Chess.com player handles are in the below player list if you as a spectator and wish to follow the match. You can follow more than one player at the same time. I am calling for players to enter from those who had already played in last year’s three online tournaments, and are able to play every day at 7.15 p.m. or able to mutually arrange an alternative time with their opponent. It will be a Swiss tournament, for at least 7 rounds starting Saturday 4th September 2021 and finishing on Friday 10th September 2021 or later if we have more rounds/entries. Time control 60 + 10. This is a CLOSED tournament, for Papatoetoe CC members only who participated in last year’s online tournaments. This is due to the high level of cheating online, which we experienced last year and wish to avoid due to the time wasted in sorting the mess out. We simply wish to have fun in non NZCF rated tournaments whilst suffering from chess withdrawal symptoms. We currently have 13 regular online players.

The trophy was kindly donated by Roy Uta’i and will feature as a regular online tournament annually in future years, just as we will continue the Stan Yee Invitational Cup and the John McRae Invitational Cup in future years. These three tournaments will not be NZCF rated, but will feature in our annual awards night. It looks very much like online tournaments will be the new normal, and we must now expect to have future over the board tournaments constantly interrupted by more Covid-19 outbreaks, which we have no control over.

Entries closed at 5 p.m. Friday 3rd September 2021. Pairings have been emailed to players on Friday night.

Joe Sapeta Rapid 2021

Saturday 18th September 2021.

Well done to Scott for taking over, and you guys for some great and amusing games. Very interesting openings. Tomorrow is Round 7 and the last round of the Papatoetoe Online U1800 Rapid. Let’s have a rest day on Monday 20th September, and start the Joe Sapeta Rapid on Tuesday 21st September, eerily similar to last year in lockdown. We will finish on Monday 27th September, over 7 rounds, 25/5 Swiss, A and B grades only. Please email me with “Reply All” to register. We need at least 8 players for a good tournament.

Lastly, I notice that three of you have played the King’s Gambit, so we will have a King’s Gambit Rapid after the Joe Sapeta Rapid. If that is a success, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be, we will install it into our regular online tournaments, along with the Papatoetoe Online U1800 Rapid. I think online is the future of chess, as we continue lockdowns. I can see Covid-19 interrupting our “normal” club schedule constantly in the next few years, and we need to adjust our mindset to online chess as the new normal.

Joe Tyson Memorial Summer Cup 2022

Wednesday 9th February 2022.

I have 10 entries now. We play every Wednesday 7.30pm except you can change your playing time (but not day) by mutual agreement with your opponent, but MUST be finished and the result emailed to Scott and Stan by 11pm every Wednesday night.

Please set yourselves up on chess.com and make sure you “Friend” everyone in this list. As far as I can see, only Kevin has done this so far. If you don’t do this you will not be able to challenge your opponent!

Scott will be the Arbiter. I will double check and assist him. This tournament will be Scott’s 4th tournament which goes towards his accreditation for his National Arbiter title, so he is not a novice at this. The Disputes Committee will be Stan Yee, Scott Smith and Roy Uta’i. We will sort out any disputes, but you must remember that we should all be having fun and being nice and kind to each other. The serious issues will come if there is any accusation of cheating. We will be checking the games to ensure there is no cheating, via the chess.com analysis programme and with each other in the Committee. So please don’t do it. Just enjoy the games and have fun.

Find your opponent with the Search function. First named player is White, so please set this up in chess.com. Will the players who have played in our Online Club please set up the challenge, so that the minutes and seconds increments are correct. This tournament is not rated for NZCF but you should be using the green light on, for rating for chess.com. Set the minutes to 60, and the increments for 10. Don’t forget to email Scott and Stan the result once finished. Scott will email the results after the last game tonight, and the draw for next Wednesday either tonight for Thursday.

Scott will email the draw out soon after this email. Rosjier has young kids, so prefers to play at 8pm, so he will email his opponent separately to arrange that.

Cheers and Good Luck for tonight!

Stan

Sunday 6th February 2022.

At the AGM it was decided that the Club will follow the Club Schedule on the Homepage of the website, whether we are in Lockdown or Red. However, only games played over the board will be submitted to NZCF for rating, which can only be in Orange or Green. So it is possible for some games in the same tournament to be unrated and some rated.

I invite Club Members only to set up on chess dot com, and to ensure your names are identifiable to the new Vice Captain Scott Smith, who will be Arbiter, and myself as Chief Arbiter for this tournament. Vega will run the pairings, with 60 minutes for each player +10 seconds per move, and 6 rounds finishing 16 Mar.

At this point we are taking entries, and you are invited to email stanyeenz@gmail.com if you have been a Club Member for at least 12 months, no exceptions. You must include your full name, date of birth and mobile number, to be a valid entry, as the chess dot com server regularly goes offline for maintenance and you will need to be rung to reset or restart your game. Remember, these online games are not rated, and a friendly way to keep in touch. So please be nice and kind. The Arbiters have the right to refuse entry to any players if there have been issues in the past with them. Closing date of the tournament will be 5pm Tuesday 8th February, no late entries will be accepted. The pairings for round 1 will be emailed out as soon as possible after closing.

At the AGM it was decided that the Club Membership fee for Seniors will be initially $50 for 6 months and to be reviewed at the beginning of August with a view of charging another $50 if we are back to over the board play and in “Orange”. Juniors will be $25 for 6 months with the same review in August. Payment of fees is due by the end of March please. Make sure you include your name or the name of your child.

Payment: No cheques or cash. Only online payments to Papatoetoe Chess Club at ASB 12-3028-0428483-00.
